Introduction

Over the past years, MSC Belgium Operations structure has drastically been changed due to various cluster operations. Through this cluster operations we have created a bigger focus and awareness in each specific segment of the operational tasks at MSC Belgium.
Today we count 5 different groups under operations :
The IMODESK-team is 9 persons strong.
This team is responsible to follow the latest guidelines of the IMDG code in order to fulfill all IMO related formalities towards the Belgian Port Authorities and ship’s staff, taken 3rd party vessel operators also into consideration.
In addition, we are monitoring all hazardous cargo which arrived at our terminals and report in case of any discrepancy occurs.
---
The Operations department exists of 5 people: 1 team leader, 3 operations agents and 1 VCI clerk.
The 3 OPS agents and the team leader rotate in a weekly shift system where 1 person is on duty 24 hours / 7 days per week. (A list of who is on duty is published on this website). This person is also responsible for the transhipment recap. In this file we report all transhipment connections towards our fellow agents and principal.
The second and third person are working in the office to assist import, export and transhipment departments in the daily work. They follow-up the coastal cargo to the other NWC ports, book cargo on 3th party feeders, arrange shunt moves between different terminals and are in close contact with MSC Geneva Planning and Liner departments to ensure all instructions are followed-up closely and correctly.
The fourth person is working at MSC Home Terminal acting as a ‘liaison officer’ between MSC Belgium – MSC Planning department – MSC Home Terminal (stevedores).
The VCI clerk is responsible for the correct reporting of vessel and cargo details of all vessels operating in the port of Antwerp operated by MSC or its partners. Starting from the moment the vessel arrives at the pilot station until sea pilot is dropped off again after all operations in the port are finished.
---
Export operations is the newest segment of the Operations Department.
Built around six people they are the link between the export sales & customer service departments and the terminal.
Making use of all the systems at hand they make sure all the right containers are shipped to the correct destinations and are in contact with the terminal to solve the problems that occur during loading operations, if any. During that problem-solving they work in close collaboration with all the other segments of the Operations Department i.e. the Operations desk, Transshipment department and IMO department because we all know the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
---
The slot charter department consists of 3 persons. Increase of Slot Charter agreements is a response of the Maritime (and not only) Industry to the actual economy situation.   Per definition Slot Charter means: a voyage charter whereby the ship-owner agrees to place a certain number of container slots at the charterer’s disposal.
This aspect brings up a new network of communication with third parties and exchange of information. We, slot charter department, are in charge of : exchange data and info with slot charters, receive and send forecasts for commercial and planning purposes, check allocations and agreements, assist slot charters with their enquiries.
---
TS Supervisor Department (aka Transhipment department) consists of 12 persons. They download the files for cargo transshipping in Antwerp in our system as well as booking this same cargo on export vessels of trades they are responsible for. These people also handle all NWC short sea-vessels as support for the Operations department. Finally, they create transparent forecasting files for the planners and our principal ensuring smooth connection on first available vessels and avoiding any risk of missing containers, overbookings, roll-overs or overlooking VIP-cargo.
